Premises Liability: Slips and Falls
You’re walking across a slick parking lot toward your favorite grocery store in the cold Pennsylvania winter when you hit a patch of ice and can’t keep your balance. You fall hard. The man parked next to you calls 911, and you’re rushed off to the hospital. Now outrageous medical bills begin to accumulate. You blame yourself, but if you believe you are solely responsible for those bills, you may be dead wrong.
Slips and fills account for over 1 million emergency room visits each year. Falls often occur due to icy sidewalks, water or food on restaurant or grocery store floors, or objects carelessly left out that you trip on. The injuries from a fall can be surprisingly severe. When you slip and fall, you are not expecting to fall. You often twist and land awkwardly. Sadly, over half of the accidental deaths in a home are caused by falls.
If you slip and fall, here are a few things you should do:
· Report the fall to the property owner and get a copy of their report
· Ask about insurance – the property owner will probably have insurance for accidental injuries
· Get the medical treatment that you need
Whether you fall on the property of a homeowner, your landlord, or a business, the property owner may be responsible to compensate you for your injuries. Personal injury and premises liability laws are complicated, though, and often involve legal proceedings and the coordination of insurance policies. For example, a claim may hinge on whether the snow melted and then re-froze. This is known as the hills and ridges doctrine.
Our law firm can help you obtain that compensation that you deserve. If you have sustained an injury by slipping and falling, you may be entitled to compensation based on premises liability law. Call Ross & Ross at (814) 274 – 8612. Let our experienced attorneys handle your personal injury claim.
